In Australia…

Amazing footage of East Creek near Chalk Drive / Chalk Lane rising and washing away lots of cars during Flash Flood in Toowoomba on Monday 10 January 2011. This is some of the best footage I have seen of the Flood and was taken from the second floor of our office which backs onto Chalk Lane.

It shows just how fast the creek turned into a torrent and quickly flooded Chalk Drive and Chalk Lane.

I also got some video of where the creek crosses Neil Street and some video of the aftermath and the huge amount of cars damaged and piled on top of one another in the Chalk Drive car park.

Why did they leave the cars? put them up on higher ground? I doubt there insurance will pay out, knowing what chaos happened after our frankly pathetic floods in comparison here. I’ve been through floods (a metre deep in my parents house – moving livestock valuables upstairs to higher ground) and really do feel for them but Jeesh! Some common sense here!!!

Queensland floods | army flies in supplies

QUEENSLAND is bracing for more disaster as the worst floods in two decades continue to wreak havoc, cutting off supply lines and leaving more than 200,000 people affected across an area larger than Germany and Poland.

With the Fitzroy River at Rockhampton expected to peak at 9.4 metres tomorrow, the town was cut off from southern Queensland and had to receive supplies via an army C-130 Hercules, which flew goods to Mackay from where they were taken by truck south to Rockhampton.

Late yesterday rising waters blocked this route and the city of almost 75,000 became completely isolated, with three Black Hawk helicopters the only way supplies can be delivered.

The closure of the arterial roads means fruit growers will lose millions in profit because they are unable to get their products to markets in the south. The Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, announced hundreds of millions of dollars more in relief funding, including loans for small businesses and farmers.

The death toll rose yesterday from two to four, with a person killed when their car was swept off a road west of Emerald. And a 38-year-old fisherman’s body was recovered south of Gladstone.
